Summary: Use TreasureCompass responsibly and legally. Respect landowners and local metal detecting laws. Your content belongs to you. We don't guarantee uptime but we'll do our best.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using TreasureCompass (the "Service"), including the web platform at treasurecompass.net and the mobile application, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years of age to create an account. By registering, you confirm that you meet this requirement.
3. Your Account
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at hello@treasurecompass.net if you suspect unauthorised access.
You may not create accounts using false information, create multiple accounts to abuse free-tier limits, or share your account with others.
4. Lawful Use — Metal Detecting Regulations
Metal detecting is regulated differently across countries and regions. You are solely responsible for:
- Obtaining all necessary permissions from landowners before searching any land.
- Complying with all applicable national and local laws regarding metal detecting, archaeological finds, and land access (including but not limited to the Dutch Erfgoedwet, UK Portable Antiquities Scheme, and equivalent legislation in your country).
- Reporting significant archaeological finds to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
- Respecting protected sites, national parks, heritage areas, and any land with restricted access.
TreasureCompass provides research tools. The platform does not confer any right to search land or remove objects from the ground. We are not responsible for your compliance with local laws.
5. Your Content
You retain full ownership of any content you upload to TreasureCompass — including GPS tracks, find photographs, notes, and pins. By uploading content, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive licence to store and display it back to you (and, if you mark it public, to other users).
You must not upload content that is illegal, infringes third-party rights, or violates these terms.
6. Prohibited Conduct
- Attempting to access, scrape, or interfere with the platform or its infrastructure.
- Reverse-engineering or copying any part of the Service.
- Using the Service to facilitate illegal activity.
- Harassing, threatening, or impersonating other users.
- Circumventing usage limits or account restrictions.
7. AI Scan Feature
The AI Scan feature uses large language model technology to suggest potentially interesting search locations based on publicly available terrain data. Suggestions are for research purposes only and do not guarantee the presence of buried objects or archaeological features. Always verify AI suggestions against your own research, local knowledge, and on-the-ground observation.
8. Free & Pro Plans
The free plan includes a limited number of AI Scan credits per month. Pro plan subscribers receive unlimited scans. We reserve the right to modify plan inclusions with reasonable notice. Paid plans are non-refundable except where required by applicable consumer law.
9. Service Availability
We aim to keep TreasureCompass available at all times but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. We may suspend the service temporarily for maintenance or upgrades. We are not liable for losses resulting from service unavailability.
10. Third-Party Data & Maps
TreasureCompass uses third-party data sources including AHN LiDAR (Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland), OpenStreetMap, VICI archaeological database, and others. These are provided by their respective owners and subject to their own terms. We do not warrant the accuracy or completeness of this data.
11. Disclaimer of Warranties
The Service is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We do not warrant that the Service will be error-free, that results from AI Scan will be accurate, or that any particular location will yield finds.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TreasureCompass shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including any injuries, trespass claims, or legal consequences resulting from your metal detecting activity.
13. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or in-app notice. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
14. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Netherlands.
